Child putting toothpaste on a toothbrush at Cascade Dental Care in Longview, WAPediatric dentistry is a specialized division of dentistry focused on providing preventative and restorative dental care for children. Pediatric dentists offer care from children beginning at infancy and continue into their teens. Our team at Cascade Dental Care offers excellent pediatric services and ensures that your child will have a pleasant experience.

It is important for us to not only teach your child good dental habits but also encourage them to regularly receive professional exams. We facilitate these goals by having a relaxed and friendly interaction with our patients. We want to teach your children towards lifelong hygiene habits that will keep them smiling brightly.

When Should a Child Visit the Dentist?

You should schedule your child’s first dental visit shortly after they receive their first teeth. Most children begin getting their first set of teeth when they are about six months old. Promptly scheduling a visit with our team after their first few teeth present themselves is vital for good dental health.

Your child will begin losing their first set of teeth at around six or seven years of age. This time frame is also key to ensuring your child’s long term dental health. A lack of proper dental care during these formative years can subject your child to unnecessary dental problems.

Children are seven times more likely to develop dental caries than hay fever and five times more likely than asthma. Dental caries, or cavities, are oral decay that can cause your child discomfort and infection if not prevented through good oral hygiene.

What Training Do Pediatric Dentists Receive?

Pediatric dentists attend four years of dental school, just like a general dentist. However, they also complete a two-year residency that specializes in pediatric dentistry. During this residency, they receive training that is focused on the care of infants, children, and teens.

This specialized training teaches our pediatric team members how to best treat your child. Our professionals are accustomed to interacting with pediatric patients and providing a relaxed and stress-free experience for your child. You can rest assured that your child is in good hands and is receiving the best care possible.

What Can My Child and I Expect?

During your child’s first visit with our team, they will receive an oral exam and cleaning. The cleaning generally includes a fluoride treatment as well. Depending on their age, they may also receive dental imaging services such as X-rays.

Our pediatric professionals will complete a risk assessment and oral health exam for infant patients. We will provide you with diet and nutrition recommendations to reduce your child’s risk of developing dental caries. An infant oral health and risk assessment will also involve discussing any concerning habits, such as thumb sucking or the use of a pacifier.

If your child needs any additional preventative or restorative service, our team will review that information with you as well and discuss any treatment options. This may include addressing concerns about your child’s bite pattern or the orientation of their teeth.
